Supply chains gather huge amounts of data, but companies still struggle to gain value from it. Professor of Supply Chain Management Dale Rogers and his co-authors asked people what they think big data is in a new global research study that looks at the current state of supply chain data analytics, and how organizations are tapping its potential to drive growth.

"We found a lot of confusion," said Rogers. "There's clearly not a unified understanding of the concept, and there's not a clear direction of how you should go. What most companies are doing is they are managing big data with Excel spreadsheets."
